The small town of San Andrés Xecul may seem unremarkable at first glance, but its baroque church with its striking, bold colors is unmissable. Upon arrival, you cannot fail to notice the imposing, intricately crafted edifice adorned with rich decorations and numerous statues. Among them stands Maximón, the most venerated entity in Guatemala's highlands. A short distance from the municipality, San Cristóbal welcomes visitors into its community forest, perfect for a nature walk.

Geographic Location

Perched at over 2,400 meters above sea level in the Sierra Madre highlands, San Andrés Xecul lies 12 km northeast of Quetzaltenango (Xela to locals). The municipality covers approximately 212 km² with a population of around 12,000 residents within the Totonicapán department. The locality encompasses some fifty hamlets and four villages, including: Nimasac, Chajabal, San Felipe Xejuyub, and Palomora.

History

Many Guatemalan municipality names, including San Andrés Xecul, combine two distinct roots. The first part references the patron saint venerated within the town, preceded by a description of the place in Nahuatl, a language of Amerindian origin. During the early colonial period, Xecul was replaced by San Andrés, and their fusion created the current name.

In the 16th century, San Andrés Xecul fell under the control of Spanish conquistador Pedro Alvarado. His forces consisted of Spanish soldiers and indigenous Tlaxcalan and Cholultec warriors.

Today

Agriculture remains the primary income source for most residents of San Andrés Xecul. Like those in neighboring Totonicapán regions, locals have found niches in crafts, services, and commerce. Today, San Andrés Xecul has gained a reputation for its small textile enterprises.

The site's main appeal lies in its 100 hectares of forest, with roots dating back over 300 years. The reserve features two distinct trails lined with numerous informational panels detailing the characteristics of remarkable plant species. You'll find a variety of activities, including 225 meters of canopy adventure for thrill-seekers. Beyond play areas of various sizes, rare bird observation zones and stone-carved pathways, a dedicated camping area has been established, complete with activities for children. The site also houses an artificial lake. It's a true sanctuary where you can enjoy a peaceful family getaway.

Salcaja Church

This is San Jacinto, the oldest church in Central America from the Spanish colonial period, located near Xela. Its architectural style tends to mirror that of San Xecul, though certain structural differences are noticeable.

Town of San Francisco El Alto

This destination is a must-visit during your stay in San Andrés Xecul. This typically quiet village transforms weekly into a vibrant quarter when Friday's market opens. Early morning sees crowds arriving to sell large quantities of local products. Add to this the atmosphere created by vendors and buyers haggling over goods. Among all Guatemalan markets, San Francisco El Alto remains the most authentic to this day. Should you extend your visit, you'll have the chance to discover other markets such as those in Almolonga and Zunil. Along the way, sites like Pasaje Enriquez or Parque Centroamerica will not leave you indifferent.

Climate

San Andrés Xecul enjoys favorable weather year-round. Overall, days are particularly clear, with mild temperatures. The town can be visited throughout the year, but the best period falls between mid-February through late April.

San Andrés Xecul is just 20 minutes from Quetzaltenango city. You can make the journey by bus, taxi, or private vehicle.
